The system for *Darshan* (holy viewing) in the sacred abode of Baba Kedar is set to undergo a complete transformation. Amidst rising crowds, the prevalence of “VIP culture,” and a disorganized system for devotees at the world-renowned Kedarnath Dham, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has taken a major decision and issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Under this new framework, devotees will now be required to pay a fee of ₹1,100 for “Sugam Darshan” (facilitated viewing).
This decision has sparked a new debate within the Dham. The central point of discussion is that, henceforth—whether one is a minister or a common guard, an ordinary devotee or a person of high status—everyone visiting Baba’s shrine will be required to obtain an entry slip (*parchi*) in strict accordance with the established rules. Chief Executive Officer Sohan Singh Rangad stated that this system has been implemented with the objective of making the pilgrimage operations more organized, safe, and time-efficient. This step was taken in light of the continuously increasing number of devotees, adverse weather conditions, and the persistent problem of long queues.

According to the new SOP, devotees will now be granted the facility of “Sugam Darshan” within a scheduled time slot upon payment of the prescribed fee. This is expected to alleviate the issue of waiting in queues for hours, thereby providing relief—particularly to the elderly, women, and pilgrims in poor health. However, the most significant point of discussion currently revolves around the fact that this new system is also poised to impact the *Pandas* (priests) and their *Yajmans* (patrons).
