The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is set to pose a significant challenge for voters in Telangana. Up to 30 percent of the names in the 2025 voter list were not mapped against the list from the 2002 SIR. Election Commission officials have discovered errors in the details of the voters who *were* mapped. The upcoming SIR process, scheduled to begin on the 25th of this month, will impact all these individuals.
Out of the 33,829,018 voters on the 2025 list, only 23,654,232 were successfully mapped. Officials found numerous discrepancies in the details of 8,944,713 of these voters. If these voters fail to submit valid identity documents, their names are likely to be removed from the list. Additionally, 10,174,786 voters have been placed in the “unmapped” category.
Many of these voters may receive notices requiring them to fill out enumeration forms and submit relevant certificates. In total, 19,119,499 voters are affected by either mapping errors or unmapped status. Allegations have been raised that the mapping process was not conducted properly in certain areas, and political parties have expressed concern that this could adversely affect the electorate.
In the Makthal and Narayanpet constituencies of Narayanpet district, 423,118 out of 495,581 voters (85.38 percent) were mapped. Among those mapped, various errors were found in the details of 187,149 voters. An additional 72,463 voters fall into the unmapped category. This area has a large population of migrant workers and the poor. A local campaign is underway highlighting that the upcoming electoral roll revision (AIR) will impact them the most.
In Nirmal—part of the erstwhile Adilabad district—there were 264,309 voters, of whom 212,270 were mapped; discrepancies were found in the records of 95,439 of these voters. In the Adilabad constituency, 161,056 out of 250,455 voters were mapped, with discrepancies detected in 71,000 cases.
There are 1,439,900 voters across the six seats of Nizamabad district. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) mapped 1,253,284 voters, finding discrepancies in the details of 507,143 of them. Medchal-Malkajgiri district has the highest number of discrepancies in voter details within the state; out of a total of 2,978,532 voters across five seats, 1,289,802 have been mapped.
Of these, 838,150 have incorrect details and are required to submit one of the identity documents specified by the Election Commission. Significant discrepancies have also been found in the details of mapped voters in the Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Hyderabad, and Sangareddy districts.
